Dr Peter Yan is currently Consultant Cardiologist and Physician in private practice at Gleneagles and Mt Elizabeth Hospitals. He graduated from National University of Singapore (NUS) with Bachelors in Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) in 1976. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine and obtained his Master of Medicine (Internal Medicine) in 1981. He then went on complete his Fellowship in Cardiology at the Alfred Hospital, Melbourne, Australia where he sub-specialised in the field of Coronary Intervention in 1986.
Dr Yan was an Associate Professor in Medicine, Department of Medicine, National University of Singapore and Senior Consultant Cardiologist, Cardiac Department of National University Hospital, Singapore. He is a member of the American Heart Association (Clinical Cardiology, Cardiopulmonary Critical Care and Epidemiology). Dr Yan sits on numerous International Advisory Boards on lipids, hypertension, anti-platelet and anti-coagulation therapy, coronary interventional devices and innovations. He was formerly the Medical Director of Parkway Heart and Vascular Centre (PHVC, 2013) and currently a member of the Medical Advisory Board of Gleneagles Hospital and the chair of the Gleneagles Cardiology Specialist Interest Group.
Dr Yan was awarded the Singapore Government Fellowship scholarship for Master of Medicine (Internal Medicine) in 1981 and the China Medical Board Fellowship for the Cardiology training in Melbourne, Australia.
He has held numerous positions including the past President of the Singapore Cardiac Society (1993 – 1994), Vice-Chairman, Singapore National Heart Association (1992 - 1993), Chairman, National Heart Week (1988 and 1993), Member of the National Committee on Cardiac Care, (2000 – 2002), member of the working group for National Guidelines and Consensus Statement in Acute Coronary Syndrome, Coronary Intervention and Coronary CT angiogram, Deputy-Chairman of the 13th ASEAN Congress of Cardiology 2000 and Deputy Chairman, Organising Committee of the 14th Asia Pacific Congress of Cardiology in 2004.
Dr Yan was the first to introduce Coronary Angioplasty (in 1986) and the Coronary Stent Program (1987) to National University Hospital, Cardiac Department. He was one of the pioneering members of the 1st Singapore Mass CPR Training.
Dr Yan has published and presented numerous papers in international and local journals. He had been invited to lecture extensively internationally and in the Asian-Pacific region. He had previously been a member of the Editorial Board of ASEAN Heart Journal, the Singapore Medical Journal and was Co-Editor of “Coronary Artery Disease : The Singapore Perspective” and Editor-in-Chief of the Course book for the 11th Live Demonstration Course in Cardiovascular Intervention, 2002.
Dr Yan’s current research interest includes evaluation of new drug-eluting stents, new device treatment of high blood pressure, lipid intervention and assessment of the vulnerability of the atheromatous plaques. He also has special interest in lifestyle modifications and intervention and recently on “precision medicine” focusing on personalised cardiovascular medicine (genomic-driven cardiovascular therapies).
